John von Neumann

To quote Von Neumann: "Much of the best mathematical inspiration comes from experience and . . .it is hardly possible to believe in the existence of an absolute immutable concept of mathematical rigor dissociated from all human experience."

Thus, Von Neumann rejected the "formalist" quest to establish all branches of mathematics on a single consistent set of axioms.

JVN made "significant contributions in both pure and applied mathematics, especially in the areas of quantum mechanics, game theory, and computer theory design."
